The jungle of sustainability seals

The topic of sustainability is on everyone’s lips and will continue to gain importance in the coming years. It is an issue that affects all of us, the individual as well as large corporations, since we have only one earth.

The hotel industry has also not been spared the word and the call to do something. The topic of sustainability in the hotel industry is multifaceted and does not only refer to one department, such as the kitchen and the use of regional and seasonal food with organic quality. It is a first step in the right direction, but in the long term it is not enough, as the hotel industry is responsible for about 1% of the world’s CO2-emissions.

Other steps to become more sustainable include biodegradable cleaning agents, recycled paper, the use of green electricity, water-saving measures or even waste avoidance and correct waste separation.

In both Switzerland and Germany, the average consumption of CO2 emissions per hotel guest per night was calculated times. The results are as follows:

The CO2-emissions in the Swiss hotel industry range between 390,000 and 530,000 tons per year. On average, a hotel guest consumes the following CO2-emissions per night:

Hotel categoryCO2-emission
3 stars14,3 kg
4 stars18,5 kg
5 stars33,1 kg

While the German Hotel and Restaurant Association DEHOGA expects the following CO2 emissions per guest/per night:

Hotel categoryCO2-emission
3 stars16,9 kg
4 stars21,0 kg
5 stars47,6 kg

Interesting to see, isn’t it?

Now to the question, how can I as a guest contribute to reducing my CO2-footprint?

One of the ways to reduce its CO2-footprint when booking accommodation and tourism offers is to pay attention to whether the accommodation or tourism offer has been awarded a sustainability label.

The following sustainability labels are the most widespread environmental labels, as there are now more than 50 different environmental certificates and environmental labels for almost all types of tourism offers.

1. TourCert

2. viabono

3. green key

4. EU Ecolabel

5. ibex fairstay

Another way is to dispense with daily room cleaning when staying for several days. By doing without, you are not only doing something to help the environment, but you are also making a conscious decision to contribute to sustainability and thus actively reduce the hotel industry’scarbon footprint.

We, at S&J, help hoteliers save natural and chemical resources without compromising the guest experience. We enable the guest to arrange his room cleaning according to his wishes and needs without sacrificing comfort. Another advantage of our solution is that we are a partner of Ibex Fairstay. So you can book your hotel stay with a clear conscience and be sure you are doing something good for the environment.
